His parents may have named him Edson Arantes do Nascimento, but to the rest of the world, he is known as Pelé. Without doubt, Pele is the greatest soccer player ever.

Born in a small village in Brazil, Pelé grew up playing soccer like most other children of his age. Too poor to afford a soccer ball, Pele and his playmates often made one by tying together a bunch of rags. Their playing field was usually a sidewalk. Old tin cans marked where the goalposts should be. Pelé and the other boys from his neighborhood often dreamed of one day becoming professional soccer players. At the age of eleven, Pelé was discovered by Waldemar de Brito, a former professional player. Waldemar de Brito was then the coach of the Bauru Soccer Club and he signed Pele to play for the junior Bauru team.

In 1956, when Pele was fifteen, Waldemar de Brito took him to the city of Santos, Brazil, to try out for the Santos professional team. Pele immediately distinguished himself as one of the best players.

In 1957, Pelé was selected to play on Brazil's national team. He scored the only goal for Brazil in the first game and another goal in the second game. Then in 1958, Pelé helped Brazil win its first World Cup.

Between 1958 and 1970, Pele played in four World Cups. He is the only person who won three World Cups. Pelé played his last game with the Brazilian national team in 1971, but he continued to play for the Sanlos team for three more years before calling it quits.

Throughout his career, Pelé had an amazing ability to touch people. Once a war was suspended for two days because the Santos team had been invited to play there and people on both sides were so eager to see Pelé play.

Pelé's name represents excellence in soccer. His 20-year career has yielded some of the most memorable moments in soccer history. People today still refer to him as the great Pelé, the King of Soccer.

For over a century, native Asian honeybees have been steadily pushed aside by the European species, which were introduced to China by beekeepers because the female workers are more focused on their job and produce more honey, which is also sweeter.

However, the European species also carries a number of deadly diseases that can damage the natural habitat. Some researchers calculate that up to 80 per cent of China’s native honeybee population has been lost since the first European bee farm in the country was established in the late 19th century.

The sweeping expansion of Asia’s European honeybee population causes an ecological crisis. After more than 70 million years of evolution, native Asian honeybees could pollinate对……授粉a wide range of plant species in the region. However, many Asian bee species across the region are now close to extinction, and that’s a cause for concern as the flowers of many Asian plants are not recognised by European honeybees, which will cause fundamental changes in the ecological balance.

A solution put forward by bee scientists was to draw a border between European and Asian honeybees. In some parts of China, bee farms are not allowed to use the European species, giving the native bees some breathing space.

After years of decline, the Eastern honeybees are gaining a foothold, especially in mountains and warm, tropical areas. It is because they can deal with the real hardship of life. The Western honeybees on the contrary, rely very much on the protection and care of humans. Without caretakers, they have little chance to survive in Asia, where hornets(大黄蜂)alone could wipe them out.

The decline of Asian honeybees was alarming because of their important role in the food chain. Fewer bees mean fewer plants, fewer plants less food and less food fewer humans. We must take positive, sustainable steps towards protecting China’s Asian honeybees.

28What made Chinas native honeybees endangered

AOverdevelopment of the land.       BIntroduction of European bees.

CPollution from cars and factories.    DLack of a variety of plant species.

29What can be inferred about many Asian plants from the third paragraph

AThey will not flower.BThey might grow slowly.

CThey might not be pollinated.DThey will harm the environment.

30What is basically typical of Chinas honeybees

ASociable.     BAggressive.     CProductive.     DAdaptable.

31What is the authors purpose in writing this passage

ATo analyse influence of European bees.

BTo urge protection of native Asian bees.

CTo suggest ways of limiting European bees.

DTo introduce comeback of native Asian bees.

A lot of us think that we should visit the dentist every six months. Whether those check-ups are really necessary is, however, a matter of debate. In 2000, three-quarters of dentists surveyed in New York were recommending six-monthly check-ups, despite the absence of evidence. Today, many organizations still recommend six-monthly check-ups. But for several decades some have been arguing that the choice of six months as the ideal space between visits is rather questionable. For example, Aubrey Sheiham, a professor of dental public health, published a paper complaining about the lack of evidence for six-monthly check-ups. Almost 40 years, he’s still making the same point.

Last year the Cochrane Collaboration performed a review of the research that had been done and they were disappointed with what they found. The quality and quantity of the research was simply too poor to back up the idea of six-monthly check-ups.

There’s something else we have to bear in mind. Even when a study finds, for example, that children who go to the dentist frequently have fewer fillings (填充物), there may be other factors (因素) at work. Those same children may have other advantages; they may eat more healthily and have better quality dental equipment.

How often should you visit the dentist, then? Bodies like Nice, which provides guidance for the National Health Service in England and Wales, say that the frequency of dental visits all depends on the individual. They recommend that children go at least once a year because their teeth can decay (蛀蚀) faster, while adults without problems can wait as long as two years. They even go as far as to say that longer than two years is OK for people who have shown commitment to caring for their teeth.

Where does this leave the rest of us the next time we receive a card in the mail reminding us our next dental visit is due? We’d all like an excuse to go less often, and the good news is that if you don’t have any problems you can probably wait a little longer than six months between visits. But exactly how long you can wait before your appointment with the dentist’s chair will depend on the assessment you and your dentist make of your own risk.

32. Who supports six-monthly dental check-ups?

A. All the dentists.

B. Many organizations.

C. Aubrey Sheiham.

D. The National Health Service.

33. We can learn from the last two paragraphs that ______.

A. people often find excuses to avoid the next dental visit

B. people should decide when to go to the dentist by themselves

C. the frequency of dental visits varies for different people

D. the healthier a person is, the less frequent the dental visits are

34. The research may not prove the idea of six-monthly check-ups because ______.

A. the researchers are not qualified

B. the number of the subjects was big

C. there was a lack of quality dental equipment

D. there might be other factors at work

35. What is the best title for this passage?

A. How Often Do We Need to Visit Our Dentist?

B. Why Do We Need to Visit Our Dentist?

C. Who Should Go to the Dentist Frequently?

D. How Can We Go to the Dentist Less?
